MAT Course
Substance use disorders and addiction are commonly seen in the Emergency Department due to the ever growing number of overdoses. In this course, the key issues regarding substance abuse treatments – especially for opioid use disorder (OUD) – are addressed. This course describes in detail the neurobiology and risk factors of addiction as well as provides crucial guidelines for implementing and integrating MAT programs within the Emergency Department. This course is designed for emergency medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, paramedics and EMTs as they regularly encounter patients with substance use disorders. Therefore, healthcare professionals will benefit from the educational components of this course as it is directly applicable to their current scope of practice.

- Describe the four factors of addiction and the components needed for evaluating medication assisted treatments.
- Distinguish the three MAT medications available for treating addiction, the requirements for each medication, and which one(s) can be initiated in the emergency department.
- Determine appropriate candidates for Buprenorphine induction.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the risks, benefits, and possible complications of Buprenorphine induction.
